PlayStation 5, launch model (CFI-1000 series) repair
The CFI-1000 series is the original, large PlayStation 5. Most arrive with one of two problems: no picture, or switching themselves off.
- Model number CFI-1000 series
- Sold 2020 to 2023
- Where to find the number On the label on the back or underside. UK consoles read CFI-1016A (disc) or CFI-1016B (digital); 1100 and 1200 numbers are later versions of the same shape.
Faults we repair on the CFI-1000
- No picture: damaged HDMI port. The pins bend when the cable is knocked. We solder in a new port.
- Overheating and shutting down. Dust in the fan and heatsink, or the liquid-metal cooling compound has moved. We clean and re-seal it.
- No power, or beeps then nothing. Power supply or main board faults.
- Disc drive faults. Discs not accepted, not read, or not ejected.
- Stuck in Safe Mode or storage errors. Rebuilt where possible; failed storage is diagnosed on the bench.
- Controller stick drift. DualSense analogue sticks replaced.
Good to know about this model
Do not open the console to dust it unless you know the layout: the liquid metal on the processor conducts electricity, and a drop in the wrong place kills the board.
