PlayStation 4, original model (CUH-1000 series) repair
The CUH-1000 series is the first PlayStation 4, with the slanted two-tone case. These consoles are over ten years old now, and most of what we do to them is undoing ten years of heat and dust.
- Model number CUH-1000 series
- Sold 2013 to 2016
- Where to find the number On the label on the back. The number starts CUH-10, CUH-11 or CUH-12.
Faults we repair on the CUH-1000
- Loud fan and overheating. Dried thermal paste and a blocked heatsink. A full clean and re-paste makes it quiet again.
- Blue light, then nothing. The "blue light of death": power supply, hard drive or main board. We test each in turn.
- No picture. Damaged HDMI port, or the video chip behind it.
- Discs ejecting on their own. The touch-sensitive eject button on early consoles misfires; we repair the cause.
- Failed hard drive. Error screens at start-up. We fit a new drive or an SSD and reinstall the system.
Good to know about this model
An SSD in place of the old hard drive is the best upgrade for this model: menus and loading screens are noticeably faster.
