Windows will not start, or shows a blue screen
A blue screen with a sad face, a start-up that goes round in circles, or "Preparing Automatic Repair" for ever. Your files are usually still there.
Likely causes
- Failed update or damaged system files. Often repairable without losing anything.
- Failing drive. Windows cannot read the files it needs.
- Faulty memory. Blue screens with different messages each time.
- Driver fault. Began after new hardware or software was added.
Try this first
- Unplug every USB device and try again.
- Note the stop code on the blue screen, for example MEMORY_MANAGEMENT.
- Try Startup Repair and Safe Mode: the steps are in our free Windows guide.
What it costs
A bench diagnostic is £54, deducted from the repair if you go ahead, and you get the price before any work starts. If the drive is failing we copy your files first, then repair or replace. Send an enquiry, or see the price list.
